VISCOUNT DOWN - the survivors' story

The 1st Battalion Rhodesian Light Infantry was formed on the 1st February 1961. In its short existence, spanning only 19 years, this fully airborne commando unit carved a reputation as one of the world's foremost proponents of counter-insurgency warfare. This was achieved through their ruthless application of the devastating  'Fireforce' technique. This tactic of vertical envelopment of the enemy was repeatedly applied during their daring cross border pre-emptive strikes against the massing tide of ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas based in Mozambique and Zambia.

Charles Melson (US Marine Corps) described the RLI as "The Killing Machine"

Quotes from the Video:

"The Saints tells a story about both the past and the present - because they are indeed a continuum. It tells a story about the Rhodesian Light Infantry and the young soldiers who fought bravely and fiercely in a remote African war 30 years ago, and in the process became legends that will never disappear from the annals and tongues of military historians... for all time."
Corporal Keith Nelson
(ex US Special Forces) RLI Medic

"We of the RAR used to laugh at your soldiers. To us they looked like boys. But they have showed us how to fight. They have the faces of boys, but they fight like lions."
Platoon Warrant Officer Herod
, the RAR

"The Rhodesian's army cannot be defeated in the field, either by terrorists or even a more sophisticated enemy. In my professional judgment, based on more than 20 years experience of counter-insurgency and guerilla type operations, there is no doubt that Rhodesia now has the most professional and battle-worthy army in the world for this type of warfare. Here is a breed of men the like of which has not been seen for many a long age."
Sir Walter Walker, former NATO commander
(writing in the Times, January 1978)

"The RLI DVD and book is the best material
on the Rhodesian bush war I have seen.
I was specially impressed with
the color combat footage depicting
the Cessna Lynx dropping frantan.
Again, great job!"
Andrew Torres (USA)
